The short answer
SMF's terminals are easy; its remote parking and rental center are not quick. Garage 2 is still scheduled for Fall 2026, so use only currently open facilities and budget the full shuttle time.

Ground transportation
Don’t stand at the wrong curb
All on-airport agencies use a separate rental-car terminal. Shuttles run about every 10 minutes, but SMF advises allowing 25–35 minutes for the wait and ride.
A free 24-hour shuttle connects Terminals A and B about every 10 minutes. Walking through the parking garage is usually faster, but the terminals are not connected after security.
The free attended waiting area has a three-hour limit, portable restrooms, and paid fast/Level 2 charging.
